I can’t promise I’ll be mother

Melissa Atkinson Mercer

my fierce gleamed womb an orchard of whole moons

the architecture of a cow’s mudded knee

it’s like this

you can have a saint in your village or a god
you can start your own sentences or finish mine
you can thrum wholehearted after the distant boys
you can turn your future small

as a mouse bone in a dense black wood
